18.5 of us at the Peppi Beach Changeover
On Saturday 19 January, we paddled out of the Bunbury Cut at 6:30 in the morning (thanks Connie for babysitting Ariki Moana for the week). Soon after we entered the harbour we encountered strong head winds, choppy seas and a loose ama. After a few nervous moments we managed to run up on a small pocket beach inside the harbour entrance and re-rig. By 7 am we were off and running south with the wind at our backs and a rolling sea cooperating nicely. (Our crew spotted what was variously described as a turtle, seal, and hammerhead shark a few kms off Dalyalup on the trip south!) In the meantime our second crew set off in Pai Hoe Waka (aka the blue boat) from our home base in Busselton and battled strong head winds 3 hours north to Peppi Beach. (The Pai Hoe Waka relief crew were in transit to Peppi Beach in Dave's Limo).
The Bunbury Crew paddled into Peppi at about 10:30, about 30 minutes after the Busso crew arrived from the south. After a brief rest, a total crew "snake infestation" and a stretch, the blue boat added a new crew and joined Ariki for the run home. The next 2 hours and 45 minutes are best described as "deteriorating paddling in varied conditions", although the blue boat paddled strongly.
Our total paddling time from the Bunbury Pocket Beach to the GBYC was 6 hours 30 minutes.
We arrived at the Yacht Club to a magnificent BBQ feast/banquet/buffet/fiesta, a few cold beers, hot showers and very good night's sleep.
